How opening sequences establish location/setting

I will be analysing two opening sequences from different genres, focusing on how location and setting are established.

Wonder Woman- fantasy action film released in 2017:

Location and setting are shown through the following:

  • A voice-over to give information about the place and describe the setting, spoken by the main character giving an insight into her life, setting the scene.
  • An aerial shot which zooms in to show Paris, followed with a continuous shot focusing on providing initial information vital to the storyline.
  • Towards the end of the opening sequence, a conversation is engaged in a room full of weapons, suggesting the setting is violence, action and adventure are the main genres.
  • The end of the opening sequence features a flashback with a little girl, the location made clear by the use of wide and focused shots.
John Wick 2:

Location and setting are shown by:

  • The use of an establishing shot to show us the recognisable place of New York city with main features such as the famous skyline, therefore making it obvious to the audience.
  • They also then proceed to use a series of closer in shots to show us exactly where the action is taking place.
  • A car chase featuring notable popular features of the main city it is set in (New York), such as yellow taxis give more confirmation to the audience.
  • The adrenaline car chase at the beginning followed by a contrasting intense conversation between two characters acts as an introduction to John Wicks, the protagonist.
