Deciding which genre to work in

I have decided to work in the sci-fi genre with crime elements, which could be noted as a sub-genre.

Science fiction

Narrative
Typically deals with imaginative and futuristic concepts such as advanced science and technology, time travel. Includes the development and application of new technology, scientific principles and futuristic political systems such as dystopian and utopian societies.
Creates alternative pathways for these ideas, and triggers the technical and scientific imagination of the audience.

Character Types
Stereotypical sci-fi character types include:
  • robots
  • aliens
  • time-travellers
  • genetic humans
  • outsiders
  • warriors
There is generally a balance between heroes and villains, although a stereotypical sci-fi plot does not include many heroes. There is usually repetitive use of false heroes.

Film language/ iconography
Commonly used sci-fi features include:

  • Close-ups of futuristic technologies and scientific elements to emphasise the importance of the plot
  • Special effects- makes the film more realistic and continue the dialogue between new ideas. Enhances the technological and scientific imagination of the viewers.
  • Symbolism of futuristic elements through costumes, setting and time
  • Close and precise editing mixed with sound effects to create sharp and impressive scenes
  • Mysterious sound effects
Examples of sci-fi films
  • Star Wars
  • The Martian
  • Blade Runner
  • Maze Runner
  • Annihilation
  • Interstellar
  • Inception
